Return of Thriller Series Tehran Marks Apple TV's 2026 Launch
The popular thriller series Tehran returns for its third season, with the first episode having aired on January 8, 2026. New episodes are scheduled for release every Friday, with the season finale airing on February 27, 2026. This return marks a strong start for Apple TV's programming lineup in 2026.
A Long-Awaited Return
The third season of Tehran has been a long time coming, having been completed in the summer of 2023. However, its debut was delayed due to geopolitical tensions in the region. The series, which follows a Mossad hacker-agent named Tamar, played by Niv Sultan, was initially set to premiere on December 9, 2024. However, Apple announced its comeback on December 4, 2025, with the new season finally premiering on January 12, 2026.
"Tehran's plot includes Iranian air defense disabling, reflecting real Middle East events," according to the show's descriptions.
The series has been renewed for a fourth season, which is currently in production. Directed by Daniel Syrkin, Tehran has produced 24 episodes so far, combining elements of a spy thriller with pulp-fiction storytelling. The show’s narrative continues to focus on real-world issues, with the third season specifically exploring Iran's nuclear program.
New Faces and Returning Characters
The third season introduces Hugh Laurie to the cast as a nuclear inspector, adding a new dimension to the storyline. Returning to the series are Niv Sultan as Tamar, Shaun Toub as Faraz, and Sasson Gabai as another Mossad agent. The season concludes with Tamar on the run, setting the stage for the fourth season's developments.
Despite her skills and determination, Tamar frequently finds herself unsuccessful in her missions, a recurring theme that adds a layer of realism and unpredictability to the series.
Apple TV's Expanding Lineup
Alongside Tehran, Apple TV has announced an array of series set to premiere in early 2026. Hijack will return for its second season led by Idris Elba, and Drops of God will follow the next week. The third season of Shrinking is also scheduled to return in January.
February will see the release of several new titles, including The Last Thing He Told Me and the Godzilla series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Additionally, A24's romantic comedy Eternity will premiere on February 13, 2026, adding a lighter note to the platform's offerings.
Looking Ahead
Apple TV's strategy for 2026 seems to involve maintaining a steady stream of new releases, with new content expected almost every week throughout the year. The platform will continue its rollout with the debut of Imperfect Women on March 18, starring Elisabeth Moss and Kerry Washington.
As Tehran leads the charge with its long-awaited third season, Apple TV aims to solidify its position in the competitive streaming market by delivering a diverse range of content to its subscribers.
